Jeff
Lyons (bio edited)
You'll recognize some of the 'icon' illustrations around
this site to be that of Canadian artist, Jeff Lyons. Jeff
currently resides in Calgary, Canada. A self-taught, professional
artist. He began cartooning in 1973, then gained an interest
in fine art in 1987, originally painting realism and impressionism.
Jeff
stumbled upon new visual territory in 1996, fusing sensibilities
of cartoon art, surrealism, abstract and pop art. He aimed
to create art that was strange enough to entertain. Ridiculous,
sublime, ambiguous, playful. Paintings with volume begging
to be looked at, yet meaningless. Visual expressions of
insanity and structure.This
"odd, loud" journey lasted between 1996 and
99, but will return in 2004.
In
2000. Jeff chose to cut back on the surreal qualities
of his art and focus on alluring, sensual, playful imagery.
He decided to build a large series of pop-portraits entitled
"Girlfriends". Over
80 paintings in this series are painted to date. All women
painted in the series are fictional. Though some are loosely
based from women Jeff knows or has seen.
